What Happens when Botox Wears Off?

As we age, we begin to rely on aesthetic procedures to recapture their youth. One popular procedure that has taken the aesthetics world by storm is Botox. Botox, manufactured from botulinum toxin, is used for a multitude of different treatments but has been renowned for its ability to smoothen skin, relax wrinkles and erase lines!

Wrinkles are a natural concern for us all and Botox is the all-powerful yet temporary cure. Like all injectable procedures, the effects of Botox wear off after a while. The procedure must be regularly repeated if you want to maintain your youthful look.

But what exactly happens to your muscles and wrinkles after it wears off? Do you go back to normal, or are you stuck with an even worse look?

If you wonder what to do after your Botox has run its course, continue reading below.

What’s Happening to Your Muscles after Botox wears off?

Botox’s function involves temporarily paralyzing the nerves attached to facial muscles. The muscles move into a relaxed state with it, giving you a snatched and smooth look for a longer time. Botox and its lifespan differ in patients, some lasting up to 6 months while others can get only two.

After a longer period, you develop new nerve endings that the Botox has not influenced. They re-attach themselves to your muscles, causing the muscle to contract. These contractions will, over time, provoke wrinkles to reappear.

You should know that there are 43 muscles on your face, and each of them requires a certain dosage of Botox. So, 8 and 14 units of Botox are used for under-eye procedures, while the between brow muscles require 18 or 36.

The effect of Botox also depends on which muscles it was used on. Thick muscles, like the brow ones, require more botox to achieve a long-lasting effect. Thinner muscles like crow’s feet and smile lines need lower doses.

What Should You Do after Botox Wears Off?

Like mentioned before, Botox is a repeatable cosmetic procedure that could become more productive after a few injections. The effects can improve if you visit your doctor after you first notice the results getting weaker.  With every other syringe, the effect will last longer.

If your medical professional, by any chance, misses the appropriate dosage, you can become a victim of fading Botox faster than you anticipated.

However, a skilled professional can help you reduce the wrinkles for up to six months.

Although lifestyle and dosage can influence effects, the results should maintain you looking fresh-faced for at least 4 months.

Larger doses are commonly used on patients that have a lower tolerance to needles and injections.

Patients who have a history of using Botox can even go up to 9 months, or even a year after a single Botox treatment. Botox newbies usually have an effect that lasts only up to 3 months.

In essence, to get your Botox settled on your face for an extended period, you need to visit your doctor more than once.

What to Do to Extend the Effects of Botox?

We know that Botox is a temporary solution to an eternal problem, but what can you do to prolong the effects as much as possible? Here are some key pieces of advice you need to abide by.

  • Prepare your muscles
  • Repeat the process
  • Consume a lot of zinc
  • Avoid sunlight
  • Pause with exercising

1. Prepare Your Muscles

Before you get botox, you determine which area is problematic. After you get the right dosage, soak up your new appearance.

2. Repeat the Process

Like mentioned before, Botox becomes more effective after the second shot. Newbie botox users report a shorter lifespan compared to veteran botox users. After some period, you will require smaller dosages because the muscles will become accustomed to the toxin.

A Botox process can start with 20-60 units for 4 months and move to lower units every 6 months.

The muscle gets weaker with time, and the duration between treatments increases while the number of units required decreases.

3. Consume Zinc

Zinc supplements help patients absorb Botox. Since Botox is an enzyme by itself, it directly depends on zinc to settle properly. Your doctor should advise you to take as much zinc as possible.

Zinc supplements have phytase as an ingredient, which can improve results done by Botox.

4. Avoid Sunshine

Your doctor should advise you to avoid sunlight as it causes wrinkles on its own. A fresh face should be spared from sunlight for at least 24 hours. Also, sunshine increases the blood flow, which can provoke the Botox to migrate.

5. Pause with Exercising

Strenuous exercise should be avoided at all costs after botox. Working out can cause the Botox to metabolize before its due, which lowers the procedure’s effectiveness. Patients are advised to be super careful when they return to the gym and stray away from exaggerated facial expressions.

To sum up, Botox is a cosmetic treatment that can be fixed after multiple uses. When Botox fades away, wrinkles may reappear, but you can eliminate that chance with repeated visits.
